UNACCEPTABLE DEMANDS: SUBVERTING HUMANITARIAN AID IN SUDAN
On 12 January, 2000, the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) (1) issued an ultimatum to the 39 humanitarian aid agencies active within SPLA-controlled areas of southern Sudan.
"HOW CREDIBLE A WITNESS:
THE NEW SUDAN COUNCIL OF CHURCHES
In order to assess the credibility of the New Sudan Council of Churches, one must examine the situation within those areas in which it exists. These are areas controlled by the SPLA.
This organisation has been described by the New York Times, no friend of the Sudanese government, as "brutal and predatory" and "an occupying army, killing, raping and pillaging".
THE SPLA: FIT TO GOVERN?

The issue of human rights is a crucial one within any country, and particularly within countries such as Sudan which have been caught up in civil conflict. It is perhaps right that there has been a considerable focus over the years on the present government in Sudan and its position and role in the on-going civil war in that country

THE WAR ON TERRORISM:

The United States and the SPLA in Sudan

President George W. Bush's 20 September 2001 address to Congress and the American People, responding to the horrific atrocities of 11 September, declared a war on terrorism. The point was also made that it was not just terrorism associated with Islamic fundamentalism that was to be targeted, but all forms of terrorism.

The plight of the thousands of Sudanese boys separated from their families and living in Kenyan refugee camps has recently been highlighted by the resettlement of some of them in the United States.
THE REALITY OF "SLAVE REDEMPTION" IN SUDAN
Civil war has raged in Sudan off and on between the Sudanese government and rebels in southern Sudan since 1955. After a ten year period of peace the conflict reignited in 1983, and the war in the south has been fought since then by the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA).
A NOTE ON ALLEGATIONS OF DELIBERATE BOMBING OF CIVILIANS IN THE SUDANESE CONFLICT:
The issue of Sudanese air force bombing of targets within the ongoing war in southern Sudan, fought between the government and the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), has, in recent years, been focused upon by several governments, non-governmental organisations and the media.
